myGov app popularity growing

The myGov app has reached two significant milestones, with more than 5.6 million people now using the app to sign in to myGov more than 122 million times in the past 18 months.

Minister for Government Services and the NDIS the Hon. Bill Shorten MP said the myGov app continues to offer Australians a convenient and simple way to access government services.

“These two achievements in such a relatively short time shows the myGov app is changing the way Australians connect with government,” Minister Shorten said.

“The myGov app now accounts for more than one-third of the 864,000 average daily sign ins to myGov, and over half of sign ins to the app use the quick and simple biometric security features, such as fingerprint or facial recognition.

“myGov’s recent introduction of passkeys gives you a secure way to sign in to your account without using a password, using these same biometric or screen lock features. By turning off your password as a sign in option, it makes it harder for scammers to steal these details through phishing scams and access your account.

“In most cases, if your myGov passkey is saved in your password manager and available across devices you can use the same passkey to sign in to both the myGov app and website.

Minister Shorten said the myGov wallet in the app is also continuing to grow.

“We’ve recently added digital DVA White and Gold Veteran Cards, giving veterans a convenient and secure way to store and access these and other government-issued cards and certificates, like the Medicare card,” Minister Shorten said.

“More than 1.5 million digital items have been added to the myGov wallet and viewed over 3.4 million times since December 2022.

“The myGov wallet will become increasingly important as we explore new ways for you to use the verified government credentials in your myGov wallet in your everyday life.

“Other recent improvements, such as being able to create digital Commonwealth statutory declarations in myGov, are helping to simplify government services and give people more convenient ways to do their government business.”

Minister Shorten said the recent Ombudsman investigation has highlighted other helpful recommendations to further strengthen the security of the myGov ecosystem.

“Importantly, it shows we’re on the right path with the security and fraud detection improvements already funded as part of the Budget, as well as other security enhancements to ensure myGov remains trusted, safe and secure.”

The 2024 Budget cemented myGov as Australia’s primary front door for online government services, with $630 million over 4 years and $145 million per year ongoing to support upgrades to security and improved messaging capability.
