The Albanese Labor Government is calling for public feedback as part of the review of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031.
We want to build a more inclusive Australia for people with disability, in line with the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.
Australia’s Disability Strategy sets out the framework for disability policy in Australia, to ensure people with disability can participate as equal members of society.
The Strategy was developed by all levels of government alongside people with disability, their families, carers, and representatives.
Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said the review of the Strategy fulfils a commitment made by all levels of government following a recommendation from the Disability Royal Commission’s final report.
“Our Government is committed to progressing the recommendations of the Disability Royal Commission and importantly making progress towards a more inclusive and accessible community and society for all,” Ms Rishworth said.
“The Strategy is a crucial part of improving the lives of people with disability.
“Since the strategy was launched in 2021, we’ve heard ongoing feedback from the disability community, and this formal consultation will give all Australians the opportunity to tell us what parts of the Strategy are working and what needs to change.
“I encourage all Australians to be part of the conversation to create an inclusive community for a better future.”
People with disability, their families and carers, disability organisations and members of the Australian public are invited to give feedback.
The updated Strategy is expected be released by the end of 2024.
The Government will continue to consult with people with disability throughout the life of the Strategy, including a major evaluation in 2025–2026.
Public consultation is now open via the DSS Engage website and closes at 5pm AEST Friday 6 September 2024.
The consultation is accessible to a broad range of audiences with Easy Read and Auslan versions available, and all members of the public are invited to share their views through a questionnaire.
