The Housing and Homelessness Ministerial Council (Ministerial Council) met in Parramatta, New South Wales and online on 27 August 2024.
The Ministerial Council welcomed the Hon Clare O’Neil MP to her new role as the Commonwealth Minister for Housing and Minister for Homelessness and the Chair of the Ministerial Council.
Ministers acknowledged the continued significant housing pressures being experienced by many across the nation, particularly for people experiencing homelessness, renters and first home buyers.
Ms Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz, Chair of the National Housing Supply and Affordability Council, provided an update on the work of the Council and an overview of housing forecasts against the National Housing Accord target to build 1.2 million new well-located homes.
Ministers discussed progress on the delivery of key national housing supply and affordability measures including the agreed reforms outlined in National Cabinet’s A Better Deal for Renters and noted jurisdictions are making significant progress across the country.
Ministers acknowledged that building more homes is key to addressing the housing pressures faced by Australians and addressing homelessness. Ministers discussed policy options and investment that could help unlock supply constraints, improve national coordination and turbocharge delivery of 1.2 million new well-located homes, including in areas related to labour, land and finance.
Ministers committed to further dedicated discussions between the Commonwealth and each jurisdiction to expedite progress in the delivery of the 1.2 million new homes through coordinated levers and investment.
