The Turnbull Government welcomes the Uniting Church in Australia’s announcement they will join the National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.
The announcement follows the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Salvation Army, the Scouts and the YMCA opting in to the scheme last week.
The Redress Scheme will offer access to psychological counselling, a direct personal response from the responsible institution and a monetary payment.
Every government and institution must take responsibility for the abuse that occurred on its watch, and provide payment and support in recognition of the survivors.
The Turnbull Government continues to work constructively with the Western Australia Government and remaining non-government institutions seeking to opt in to the Redress Scheme.
Last month, the Federal Government introduced legislation to establish the National Scheme, which will start on 1 July subject to the passage of the legislation.
