Support for Australians with disability in the workplace is increasing.
More than half of Australian businesses are missing out on an untapped pool of talent by overlooking candidates with disability during the hiring process. New research released by the Australian Government shows that while the majority of Australian employers are open to hiring people with disability (77 per cent), a much lower percentage (35 per cent) demonstrate behavioural commitment to doing so.
As many of you know, Australia was one of the original state signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (‘the Convention’). Accessibility is a priority for Australia’s international engagement in development, humanitarian and human rights.
The Parliamentary Friends group remind us of the values and principles that bind all of us in this iconic place. Eye health and vision care is a cause we can and should support. I commend Vision 2020 on advocating for the elimination of preventable blindness and vision loss for close to twenty years. Vision 2020 is a strong voice in ensuring Australia meets our obligations to the World Health Organisation’s Universal Eye Health: a global action plan 2014-2019.
